Halloween Advice
Halloween Starts With Them
Every pet experiences Halloween differently. Some are ready to greet every trick-or-treater, while others would rather enjoy the night somewhere quiet. A little preparation can help make Halloween more comfortable, safe and enjoyable for everyone.
- Choose comfort over cuteness. Make sure costumes fit comfortably and don't restrict movement, breathing, hearing, vision, or the ability to eat and drink.
- Introduce costumes gradually. Let your pet try their costume before Halloween and reward calm behaviour with treats or praise. If they seem stressed or uncomfortable, skip it.
- Watch for signs of stress. Hiding, freezing, excessive panting, lip licking, yawning, trembling, pinned-back ears, or trying to remove a costume can all signal that your pet needs a break.
- Give them somewhere to retreat. Doorbells, costumes and unfamiliar visitors can be overwhelming. Make sure your pet has access to a familiar, quiet space away from the activity.
- Let your pet choose whether to socialize. Even social pets may find a steady stream of trick-or-treaters stressful. Don't force interactions if they'd rather keep their distance.
- Watch the decorations. Keep candles, wires, glow sticks and small decorations away from curious paws and mouths.
- Secure the escape route. Keep pets safely behind a closed door, gate or in another room when answering the door or handing out candy.
- Keep identification up to date. With doors opening frequently, check that collars and ID tags are secure and that microchip information is current.
- Check the floor. Pick up dropped candy wrappers, small decorations and costume accessories that could become choking or swallowing hazards.
- Be mindful of outdoor decorations. Secure cords, inflatables and other decorations and keep them away from areas where pets regularly walk or play.
- Create a comfortable safe space. Set up an area away from the front door with their bed, water and favourite toys so they have somewhere familiar to relax.
- Keep the candy away. Chocolate, xylitol and other candy ingredients can be dangerous for pets. Keep Halloween treats out of reach and remind guests not to share.
- Be careful with pumpkin scraps. Plain, cooked pumpkin can be pet-friendly, but stems, large pieces and discarded pumpkin parts should be kept away from curious pets.
- Have pet-friendly treats ready. Give your pet their own Halloween treat so they can join the fun without being tempted by human candy and snacks.
- Watch the wrappers. Candy wrappers, sticks and packaging may be tempting to chew and can pose choking or digestive risks if swallowed.
- Secure the garbage. Keep food scraps, wrappers and discarded treats in a covered bin your pet can't access.
