How to Prepare Your Pet for Winter

With the cold weather coming, snow will soon arrive. It is natural to think because your dog has fur and paws that they would be unaffected by the cold weather, however, that is not true. Just like humans, dogs also require winter accessories to keep them safe and warm during the cold winter months.

Bundle Up

Dogs, just like humans, have different levels of tolerance to the cold. Certain dog breeds' winter coats are not actually thick enough to keep them warm for long periods of time. Your dog could also simply not like the cold. Dressing them in a winter coat can not only make them look stylish, but also allow them to be more comfortable and make winter walks longer and more enjoyable. Hats and scarves are also a great addition to their wardrobe because the fur around their ears is not as thick as the rest of their body.

Protect Their Paws

While it is true dogs' paws can handle most terrains, their paws can become irritated with the many different salts people use on sidewalks and streets. Booties protect your dog’s paws from outdoor irritants while keeping them warm. If you know your dog will never wear booties, make sure you wipe down their paws, legs, and belly when you return to remove any potential irritants.

Have Up-to-Date Tags

During the winter months, days are shorter and visibility at night and during storms is very limited. In case your furry friend gets lost, it is important that your dog has up-to-date tags that list your current phone number and address. Collars can also become worn and may break, so be sure that your dog's collar fits comfortably but will not slip and come apart if you become separated.

Plan for Going Out and Staying Home

Canadian winters are both beautiful and brutal. A light sprinkle of snow can quickly change into a fierce blizzard, which is why it is important to plan accordingly. If your regular walk is cut short or you are unable to go out at all, having interactive toys ready to go at home ensures that your dog gets some mental and physical stimulation. Puzzle toys are great as they require your dog’s full focus and attention in finding a treat. Remember, puzzle toys should always be used under supervision so that your dog does not begin to destroy the toy in order to retrieve the hidden treat. Ren’s also provides at-home delivery for a wide range of dog food, so you no longer have to worry about going out in the cold to get your dog’s food.

Car Safety

It is natural to think because the warm weather has ended, there is no longer any danger of leaving your pet in the car. However, a freezing car can be just as dangerous as a hot car, so it is best to leave your furry friend at home or with family if you have errands to run. You can also protect your seats from any debris your dog may track into your car with seat protectors.
