Outdoor Fun With Your Cat

We all know that travelling with cats can be hard. Their determination can sometimes be confused with stubbornness and a simple trip to the vet can be so stressful you may never want to try it again. What most of us don’t know is that travelling with a cat that is used to it can be very rewarding and fun. With the proper care and safety measures is possible to make every trip the best experience for you and your kitty. Nothing practice and a little determination can’t help, right?

Health

As the cat is going to be exposed to a different environment and potential risks, they need to have immunization up-to-date. If your cat is not 100% healthy, it’s best to leave them at home where they can rest and recover.

Hydration

Stressed cats tend to stop eating or drinking water. Make sure to give them water every hour and feed them with wet food to add moisture to their diet.

Hygiene

Cats are very clean creatures and hold their needs until they find a place they feel comfortable to go to the toilet, but accidents can always happen. Keep a litter box available whenever possible, use pads on the car seat, and always have pet cleaning supplies on hand.

Preparation

Pack up everything your cat will need on the road and make sure to add extras of the things that are essential, such as food, water, harnesses, and leashes. Don’t forget to pack a few of their toys to help keep them occupied.

Safety

It’s not safe to let cats walk freely in the car as they can be distracting to the driver and in case of an accident, they are not protected. Placing your cat in a pet carrier will help to keep her and yourself safe. Also remember, just like humans in cars, pet carriers need to be buckled up too!

Anxiety

Calming sprays can work wonders to calm a fearful and anxious cat. The sprays send positive messages to the cat and can help them to feel calm and relaxed when travelling in the car or visiting the vet. A favourite blanket or bed can help bring a sense of familiarity to a new place.

Entertainment

It’s boring when you’re in the car for long hours without doing anything, right? Cats will probably nap the whole trip, but when they’re awake they need to be stimulated, so they don’t get bored and stressed. Bring his or her favourite toys for the trip and make sure to stop regularly for a little walk and stretch outside of the carrier.

Documentation

It doesn’t matter if you’re going on a trip to the cottage or on a long international trip, you need to take your cat’s identification with you. Of course, you will need more documentation if you’re going out of the country on vacation, so make sure you have all the documents you need with you to enjoy your trip.

Age

If your cat is a senior, travelling can be more stressfull on them. Senior cats find comfort in staying in familiar places and situations. Consider finding someone to take care of them during your trip as this may make for a happier healthier feline!

Now that you know all the basics buckle up and have fun!
