Our Furry Family Members

“Pets are a part of the family” is no longer just a phrase you hear on occasion. Over 95% of Canadians consider their pet to be a member of their family, and almost 80% buy gifts for their pet for birthdays and holidays. To celebrate Family Day, we collected a few stories from pet parents about their furry family members that will warm your heart and make you smile.

Reggie, age 1

My partner and I had just bought a house and we were very excited to share our space with a furry little creature. So one Sunday we grabbed all the necessary items for a new kitten, such as litter, toys, and treats, and made a trip to the Humane Society. When we arrived there were so many kittens to visit it was a little overwhelming. We walked around looking in at all the different kittens and made a list of all the ones we wanted to meet. The first two we met, while very cute, hated me. They did not want me to touch them and actively hide if I got close. The next kitten we met was this little orange thing named Reggie and he was busy eating his dinner. As we got closer, he looked up at us and started purring, so I reached out to pet him and he started licking my hand, and that was it he was mine. When we brought him home and introduced him to his new space he was so calm and friendly. I started crying because even though I had only known him for roughly an hour I already loved him so much and he completed my little family.

Sunny, age 15

When I first saw Sunny he was in the window of a local pet shop playing with his sibling. I had never been a dog person. I always thought they were cute, and never wanted one myself, but there was something about Sunny. I was with my husband at the time and he asked if I wanted to meet him. I said no but I made a little deal with myself. If he was still there one week later I would meet him. Well one week passed and I was sure he would be long gone, but when I passed by the window he was still there. My children were with me this time and something came over me and I asked to meet the puppy. The kids of course loved him and began begging me to bring him home. My husband then looked at me, smiled, and pulled out his wallet. That was 15 years ago, and even though he is now a grumpy old man, he will forever be my puppy.

Lady, age 8

Lady became part of our family in August of 2014. She came from a home that didn't treat her well and wasn't given the love and attention she deserved as she was one of ten dogs at her last home. We are a very laid back family and Lady fit right in being the center of everyone's attention. Even though she loves that, she's also very keen on when we need attention too and will come to give you kisses and offer for you to snuggle her if it will make you feel better (it does). She likes to help us cook because she knows she'll get a little treat or two from what we're making, which she will often take and bury in the corner of the couch for later. Her favourite activity is curling up with someone and taking a nap. She's only been with us for 6 and a half years, but it feels like she's always been here. Lady is our little snuggle bug and a big part of our family.
