Is It Time to Switch to Raw Food?

If you are reading this article you are or at one point thought about switching your pet to a raw food diet because of its many benefits. However, with so many options and steps it can be overwhelming, especially if your dog has been on dry food for years. That is why Ren’s put together this step by step guide to switching your dog to raw food.

Always Introduce new food slowly

When first introducing new food to your dog it is important to do it slowly over a 7 day period. On days 1-2 the breakdown of food should be 75% kibble and 25% raw. For the first few days be sure to take note of your dog's bathroom habits. If their stomach is obviously very upset stop feeding them raw and consult your vet. On days 3-4 the breakdown of food should be 50% kibble and 50% raw. It is also normal at this point for your dog to be eating faster than usual because the taste and texture of their food is different. However , if they are eating too quickly, where they are coughing or choking, spread out the meal over 15 minutes. On days 5-6 the breakdown of food should be 25% kibble and 75% raw. And finally on day 7 they should be eating 100% raw!

Know the temperature difference

Raw food is naturally a different temperature than kibble as it must be stored in a fridge and kibble and be stored in a cupboard. To help ease your dog's transition, take the raw food out and let it sit on the counter for 10-15 minutes for the first few days of transitioning. About mid way through the week you can start reducing the time it sits on the counter until you feel comfortable taking it right out of the fridge and putting it directly in their bowl.

How to calculate the correct portion

One of the most common reasons people are hesitant to switch to raw food is portion control. Follow the steps below for puppy/dog portions.

Puppy Portions

The amount of raw food you give your puppy is determined by their age in months and a percentage of their current weight in pounds.

  • 2-3 months: 10% of their current weight in pounds

  • 4-5 months: 8% of their current weight in pounds

  • 6-8 months: 6% of their current weight in pounds

  • 9-12 months: 4% of their current weight in pound

Example: 6 month old puppy. Weight = 30 pounds. Calculation is 30 minus 6% = 1.8 pounds of raw food per day

Dog Portions

The amount of raw food you give your dog is determined by their age in years and a percentage of their current weight in pounds.

  • 1-7 years: 3% of their current weight in pounds

  • 7-14 years: 1.5% of their current weight in pounds

Example: 2 year old dog. Weight = 50 pounds. Calculation is 50 minus 3% = 1.5 pounds of raw food per day
