  • A Poop Free Yard? No longer dare to dream.

Posted on August 8, 2012 by Sierra Sammy

It's a glorious afternoon. You plan on spending your very little free time today relaxing in your backyard. You take a seat and suddenly you're downwind of that smell all pet-parents know too well. Ugh.
Whether or not you use an above-ground compost system or you have a designated "poop place" in your yard, the smell is something that can really take the joy out of a pleasant backyard experience.

You are about to join me in my first waste management system installation process. Are you excited? … I'm not sure yet if i am but I do know that I am sick of dealing with all of my dog's piles in my back yard. Where do you put it? It smells like…well that cause it is! So, what do you do with it? I personally want a quick, convenient, odourless, and environmentally friendly option. A typical day here for me at Ren's usually entails coming across truly awesome products, and this one caught my eye so much I knew I had to write about it. Doggie Dooley Miniature Septic Tanks use natural bacteria and enzymes to break down waste into a liquid to absorb into the ground, keeping it off the surface. What a great idea, an in-ground composting system! I had heard of such a thing for when you are camping or at your cottage, but to use it for your dogs daily drop, what a great idea!

Things to look for when researching a dog septic system:

    • Durability. Look at the material. Is it rust-proof?
    • Hands-free. Remember we are dealing with poop...do you really want to touch it? Using a foot peddle would be ideal so you don't put out your back!
    • Environmentally safe (non-toxic, harmless to lawns, pets and other wildlife)
    • Capacity (The poop? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE POOP!)
    • Maintenance (how often do you have to add water and digester)

Standard Septic or Pyramid style - What's the difference? Both work on the same principle so the main difference is capacity and maintenance.

Standard systems require a small amount of water daily/every time you add waste.
Pyramid systems require a 5 gallon bucket 2-3 times a week.
Both require a tablespoon of digester per week per dog. The large tanks, galvanized steel or the pyramid style, can accomodate two large dogs. The regular size will handle 2 smaller dogs. But, if your pack is more than 2, who says you can't buy more?

For the digester to work properly the waste cannot dry out, you decide how often you want to water it. The last decision you have already made, how many four legged family members do you have? Make sure your model has the ability to handle all of your dogs!

When I bought my system, I also made sure to grab a good pooper scooper, so I can easily transfer my dogs waste into the Doggie Dooley. Doesn't matter if I'm all dressed up and ready to go out on a hot date!

I'll be reporting fully on my installation process AND how its working after a month of filling it with poop! I'm totally sure it will work - so much so that I'm going to have a tea party right on top of it.

Check back to see if I'm joking.
